The Human Instinct
Exploding technology should account for the safety of mankind. There maybe a time down the lane, when self driving cars will become an in-thing. Being a millennial in the 21st century, I am trying to embrace the concept of self driving cars. However, I strongly feel that a robot can function only as much as it is programmed to do so. The human instinct - this can never be programmed.
Humans are born cautious. We are always aware of what's happening around us and absorbing the smallest movements. A robot will not be able to the same thing since there are only so many permutations and combinations of scenarios you can program it to react to. The human instinct is such an important factor and this for instance may have not caused the mishap at Arizona! Additionally, driving is a source of income for so many people around the world. Snatching away an occupation that feeds families by advancing technologically will lead to an unemployment epidemia!
There are many other ways to bring in a more efficient driving system - motor companies can think of ways to make driving more safe. For example - can we ensure that there is a speed controller in your car? There needs to be a radar to read the speed limit and immediately alert you to control your speed if you are driving fast.
Also, another extremely beneficial concept would be having a count down next to the traffic light so that you aren't guessing when the light is going to turn yellow. So many accidents occur due to cars speeding at traffic lights and trying to cross it. Having a count down will help you assess if you are going to cross the light or not.
So, once again as long as technology can be beneficial to mankind it's great to see it evolve. As soon as it borders on taking away jobs and being a safety hazard, we need to stop and rethink "Technological advancement - boon or bane?"
